General Product FAQ

Q: What is Predix Studio? How does it work with Predix App Engine?

A: Predix studio is a low code visual application builder for the building and extension of applications. Predix App Engine is the intelligent data foundation and scalable runtime that underlies applications built in Predix Studio. App Engine orchestrates all the underlying “plumbing” of an application while Predix Studio simplifies the building of the application through an integrated workflow that makes it easy to take apps from development to production.

Q: How does Predix Studio work with other GED applications like APM?

A: Digital Industrial organizations looking to take advantage of the Industrial IoT all have one thing in common – asset centricity and a desire to increase their asset intelligence. Improving asset performance is the foundation of their transformation. For GE Digital customers this journey begins with our core application Asset Performance Management (APM). For this reason, Predix Studio is designed as an extensibility tool for your APM solution. Citizen Developers can use Predix Studio to enrich, enhance and extend your APM solution by either adding new data sources using the Data Management Workbench, create custom APM views using the low code application composition tools, or create entirely new lightweight applications to extend your APM use case.

Q: What is a citizen developer?

A: Citizen developers are industrial subject matter experts like Power Systems Engineers, Reliability Managers, Upstream Production Engineer, or controls engineers. They are the domain experts when it comes to the assets, data, process, and business challenges in their industrial vertical and the good news is your workforce already has them, no need to hire additional resources. With a STEM background and industrial tribal knowledge, these citizen developers are empowered to tackle the challenges they face through GED’s high productivity application development platform.

Q: How specifically do you enable citizen developers? Do you have a library of pre-configured dashboards or templates?

A: Citizen Developers in Studio rely on a combination of approaches to truly enable citizen development. 1) You can use the UI to click, configure, drag and drop functionality to create an application 2) for more advanced functions users can leverage our 4GL, a human-readable language based on XML syntax, to quickly configure or add functionality and 3) Access to the Studio Catalog where you can find plugins, small pieces of reusable functionality, to accelerate application development time.

Q: What kinds of protocols, data sources have you integrated or worked with?

A: Predix App Engine does not provide engineered integrations to particular data systems, instead it provides a flexible integration framework which is configured to connect to the target sources. There is support for bulk ingestion (CSV, XML file, ESRI shapefile), REST-based data transfer (HTTPS JSON/XML), JDBC database connections, connections to Apache HBase and Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS). Besides this rich set of supported integrations, the capabilities are further extensible by developers using our Java SDK (eg. OPC UA, MQTT). And so, with some investment by software developers, the integration capabilities can extend to virtually any target system or protocol. In addition, Predix Studio users have access to a Catalog of reusable integration plugins developed specifically for Predix App Engine (eg. SNMP v2c library, GE Historian v7 service).

Q: Is data manually imported, batched or can be streamed real time?

A: Data can be imported from any number of OT and IT systems via database connections, APIs, and file transfers. This import can be performed manually, batched, or automated through the Predix App Engine Scheduler. Real-time data can be streamed to Predix App Engine as well via the Scheduler. A typical application would implement fully automated and on-going data transfer using a combination of batch and unbatched flows.

Q: How is the data modeled?

A: Our AI-assisted workflow is a powerful feature of the integration technology that relies on a unique approach to Machine Intelligence to interpret, discover, learn, model and map data. The approach includes a rich set of algorithms including machine learning, document processing, natural language processing and more; and an analytic framework that applies the algorithms in an ensemble or graph to extract features, normalize data, and create associations, assertions, and observations.

Q: How does the data management workbench compare to competitive products/approaches like ETL tools?

A: An intuitive AI-assisted workflow – and machine intelligence driving the back-end processes – our platform provides 6-times faster time to value versus traditional ETL. The traditional approach to data integration requires a data architect or data scientist to manually map data from source to target model and can take months. The Data Management Workbench accelerates this process of modeling and mapping data to a common model in minutes and days not months.

Q: What kinds of developer tools and support do you offer?

A: Predix Studio supports the full software development lifecycle (SDLC) with access to the visual application building environment, an Integrated development environment (IDE), documentation (wiki), code samples, templates, SDKs, and collaboration forums. Predix Studio also gives you access to the Studio catalog, a central repository where you can quickly download plugins to accelerate your app development time. Easily find a plugin to add functionality to your app, or create your own reusable plugin and make it available to your team using the catalog.

Q: Can you provide an example of an APM extensibility use case?

A: GE’s APM is used across several industries to provide critical information about assets like detecting when a particular failure mode threshold is breached, predicting maintenance and more. In this aviation example for a commercial airline, APM was used to monitor the health of their jet engines across a number of fleets. Using APM’s Reliability Management the airline was able to better understand the sensor data coming from that engine. Then operators would independently analyze data from their FADEC (full authority digital engine control) system in excel sheets, so turn around to get operational insight and diagnose the problem was around 30 days. With Predix Studio we were able to extend this initial APM solution by providing real-time insights into the FADEC control data so that operators could diagnose problems in real time.
